Captain Underpants, that irreverent hero of your little one’s everyday adventures is taking on an enemy that your children might recognize come this fall – the schoolyard bully.
Famed children’s writer Dav Pilkey used his own childhood experiences to write Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers, released on August 28, 2012.
Captain Underpants Knows Bullies
As a child diagnosed with ADHD who spent a lot of time in hallway detentions, Dav would read and draw to while away the long hours on his own and often found himself the target of bullying by the rougher kids and the in crowd.
The book is designed to get kids to laugh – like all the many books in the wildly popular Captain Underpants series – and the story follows two kindergartners as they use their imaginations to hold their own against the school bully. The author hoping it sends the message: you’re not alone. Dav Pilkey will be in the Toronto area to make a rare appearance to promote the new book, the first release in the Captain Underpants series in five years.
It’s sad that kids have to deal with bullying even at the youngest grades and it’s no secret that bullying in school is rampant. It’s something teachers often can’t recognize or control, leaving your child to deal with these situations on their own.
Why not equip them with the skills and confidence they need?
Judo lessons can give your child the confidence and the skills they need to confront and even prevent bullying at any age even as they increase fitness levels. They’ll be involved in a time honoured martial art that:
• enhances balance and coordination.
• encourages reacting with thought and consideration – not in anger or frustration.
• they’ll learn how to defuse a confrontation in addition to how to defend themselves against aggressive actions.
At Budokai Judo Club in Toronto, our experienced judo instructors know what kids face and we regularly witness the transformation that happens in their lives when they gain confidence through judo practice. We can offer judo lessons and bully-proofing at any age.
